ABOUT
Coming from a scientific background, Brandon embraces an ecological approach to architecture. Our architecture is informed by the work of psychologist James J Gibson. At Brandon Kapel Architecture, we recognize his theory of affordances, which assumes objects carry meaning and specific opportunities for action. For example, a door handle can signal a pulling or pushing action. The finish of a wall can welcome a human touch or it can discourage any desire for proximity. Understanding how we perceive our stimuli and their affordances in our environment is critical to our practice. How we chose to assemble these various objects into a complete design is essential to the success of our projects.
We strive to uphold Charles and Ray Eames maxim "Take your pleasure seriously." Not only in the way that we function as an office, through finding enjoyment in our design process, but also in how we envision the life of our projects. Like the Eames, we believe work and play are symbiotic, and proper design should blend these two into a single, joyful process. They should manifest in designs that bring genuine comfort and happiness to our clients, while also enabling efficient productivity and healthy habits. We listen carefully to the unique needs of our clients to generate custom, yet adaptable designs.
