GARDEN SAUNA
A growing number of peer reviewed studies demonstrate regular sauna use can improve health. This sauna rests within a native garden at a family home. The yakisugi rain screen surrounds a wood-powered sauna space and changing area. A wraparound porch leads to an outdoor shower built into the retaining wall. The windows are oriented to provide privacy from the main house, while also taking advantage of views to the landscape.
Rammed earth is a centuries-old construction method in which layers of a carefully proportioned mixture of soil, sand, gravel, and stabilizing agents are compacted within temporary formwork to create solid structural walls. Increasingly adopted in contemporary architecture, rammed earth combines environmental performance with a distinctive natural aesthetic, producing buildings that are both sustainable and visually expressive. We explore the benefits of this construction method in this home.
RAMMED EARTH RETREAT
POOL PAVILION
The outdoor pool pavilion accompanies the sprawling estate in Virginia. The project embraced the client's desire for a classical composition to provide a respite from the weather. Everything from the sconce panels, which will support future plant growth, to the finials, and other elements of the copper roof are custom. These elements come together to create an exciting space for their multigenerational family to congregate and enjoy the landscape.
